Meet and Greet parking is fairly new to us here in the United Kingdom, although our coverage to American media has made us well aware of the theory of meet and greet or valet parking as it is known in America. Many an episode of Columbo or Magnum was watched in glee as cars were left outside restaurants or nightclubs only for the keys to be tossed to a slip of a lad dressed like a bellboy to zip it off out of site. Although my life over here in the UK has yet to see this substitute to parking your own car really take a grip on everyday life, it is becoming more and more prominent around our Island’s airports.
The increase in meet and greet airport parking commenced at the start of the 21st century as a direct choice and in many ways reverse to the less expensive off site car parks that started to pop up around flower around the airport perimeters. These more time saving and extravagant alternatives were there to offer choice for those who didn’t mind paying a bit more for the pleasure of not having to walk to a bus and then take another trip to the airport.
Although economical parking remains the airport parking of choice for those going on cheap weekend breaks, as the last you want is to pay more for your parking than you have done for your holiday, there now seems to be a lot more acceptance in tourists simply driving up to the terminal and handing over their keys.
The travellers who use this product seems to profit the most are either those with lots of bags or those with lots of children, along with those who would previously have got in cab to the airport. The rise in the number of travellers taking a winter vacation has also led to the increased embracing of this once so American parking option, as who in their sound mind want to rush around pulling a suitcase and skis?
Although it’s more expensive for this added meet and greet service, when you can get a week’s parking for around £40, the additional, when you are spending over £1,000 on a family trip or skiing for a couple, is simply swallowed when set next to the convenience. However, I think it will be a while before i’m pulling up at my local concert and bellowing “park it kid”?
