I remember listening to a drummer who played for some fairly well known rock bands. He said that there was one thing that allowed him to escape his addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Finding yourself addicted to a substance is not fun. Knowing that you have a dependency on a chemical or more specifically the feeling it gives you can be a disheartening realization. The shock is so strong that some people tend to go into denial about the existence of the habit.

Not wanting friends and relatives to find out leads to a lot of deception both for oneself and also towards those we love the most. This might be a heavy burden. A person becomes scared of the truth and doesn't want others to know either. He may fear the judgement or how his friends will treat him after learning of the problem.

Then there is the physical component to the addiction. It is difficult for the brain to cope chemically with an addiction. As the drug increases levels of certain chemicals unnaturally, the brain has to adjust by creating less of the compound itself. Then when the drug wears off the brain is stuck with less of the substance present than before it was artificially introduced. This leads to a down, flat state.

The contrast between the highs and lows, the ups and the downs can be striking and further increases the desirability of the drug within the mind and thoughts of the addicted person. The next time the drug is taken, the brain may need even more of it to feel the same way upon the initial exposure.

The brain then creates even less of the chemical naturally, creating an even deeper low. This cycle continues until the addicted person feels that he cannot live or function without the drug.

It is easy to see how difficult the situation becomes for the addicted person. The deeper the addiction goes, the seemingly harder it is to get out.

What about our rock star friend? He found a way out. He began practicing Falun Dafa, which is a character improvement and meditation practice that many people have found to be extremely powerful for the health of the body and the mind. You can read more about it at the Falun Dafa website. (falundafa.org)

In fact there is an interesting book about the healing effects of Falun Gong. It is called, Falun Gong Stories - A Journey to Ultimate Health. There is overwhelming subjective documentation of peoples' experiences with Falun Gong. The stories are quite amazing.

Our hero found that Falun Dafa helped him. He attributes his now drug and alcohol free life to his discovery of this ancient Chinese qigong practice.
