The 2011 MLB season is well underway and more than half way through the regular season. This is a great time to look more closely at the players that are doing well and are making a strong impact for their team. Although you can almost always count on veteran players to help sell MLB tickets because of their skill, durability and recognition, rookie players also make fans want to watch the games. Sure, there are different aspects of the game that can be analyzed and different players that can do a multitude of things on the field, but hitting is probably the most fun to watch. This season has already shown us some great playing from a variety of teams, but there are some young hitters in the league that deserve honorable mention.

The Washington Nationals have struggled to make a real name for themselves since they became part of the MLB in Washington, DC. But they have continued to make smart moves off the field in order to improve their on the field statistics. In fact, the Nationals have not one but two different strong, rookie hitters on their team that have the potential to lead them to future playoffs. Wilson Ramos is the team’s center and one of their strongest hitters. Ramos was traded to the Nationals by the Minnesota Twins last year and has since been doing an outstanding job in DC. He’s hit .414/.500/.483 in 29 at-bats, and that’s not even as a starter. With Pudge not playing well this season, Ramos will probably be on the team’s starting roster.

Danny Espinosa is another player who has had an outstanding year with the Nationals, hitting .512 on average. He’s a disciplined hitter that goes for power on every swing, making him a promising hitter for the team and for the league.

The Blue Jays also have a strong hitter in their pen in the form of catcher J.P. Arencibia. He hasn’t been at bat enough times to qualify for percentage rankings, but his statistics speak for themselves. Arencibia has already racked up 26 RBI and eight home runs. There’s no telling how much better he’ll do as the season and his career progresses.

Darwin Barney of the Chicago Cubs may have a stellar defensive track record, but his offensive record is rather impressive. He has been known to do well defensively, though it hasn’t shown in the majors yet. But Barney has something many other rookies in the league don’t have – the lead in several categories. He leads the league’s rookies in batting average, hits and runs – and the season isn’t even over yet.

The Los Angeles Angels’ first baseman Mark Trumbo was only supposed to be a temporary move for the team. The Angels were waiting for Kendrys Morales to return to first base, but that hasn’t happened and Trumbo has taken full advantage. So far, Trumbo has had 28 RBI and has been fairly solid at bat. If he continues to play and hit this well, Morales may have to take a back seat to Trumbo.
