If the general idea is that people don’t want to be drinking contaminated water, and they find out the community, and likely their home tap water is full of leaked titrated water from a nuclear plant, people are not happy campers. This is what happened in Brattleboro recently. Unfortunately, not that many people in town were familiar with the benefits of distilled water; otherwise they may have avoided having contaminated water in their homes.
Seemingly water technicians verified there was a leak where the off gas pipe tunnel met a 2-inch drain line. After locating that leak, it was also considered to be the source of the town’s contaminated water problems. Unfortunately, this looked like it wasn’t the “only” source. It appears that where the duct and pipe connect, there’s space to let the drain line water seep out the pipe tunnel and soak into the soil outside the tunnel, thus making its way into the local groundwater.
On one side of the fence, the technicians have stated the source of the leak is at the pipe and tunnel. On the other side of the fence, the nuclear plant responsible for the leak in the first place is saying they’re not convinced that “is” the source.
So, what this all boils down to is “they said versus those guys said” and nothing is getting done other than some spirited bickering over where the contamination is coming from. Rather ridiculous really, when the real issue is cleaning things up and providing safe water for the town. In the meantime, if the powers that be had spent any time in educating the town residents about using water distillation systems, the number of townsfolk drinking bad water wouldn’t have been as high.
No matter where who thinks what is coming from, the remedial actions taken seem to have made a difference, and the concentrations of tritium in groundwater monitoring wells has been decreasing over time. Too bad a contest between the nuclear plant’s assessment of where the leak was/is and the technician’s assessment of where it was became a bone of contention. All it would have taken was the town pulling together and checking out the value of having a water distillation system installed in their homes to deal effectively with the end results of this contamination.
All they needed to do was just pitch in together and do whatever it took to clean things up. If the source turned out to be two different locations, so be it. Just put the toys away fellas and get on with cleaning things up.
