I am actually talking about the Styrofoam clamshells. You know the take out boxes that are used by restaurants for that bite you could not finish, or the meal you will eat later. It is great to enjoy the left over food the next day for lunch or just later. Not only are you saving money by not throwing away the food, but you are enjoying the experience another time.
However, did you think where the Styrofoam take out boxes go after you throw them away? Did you know that many cities are outlawing their use in the food service industry? In reality the convenient Styrofoam containers are going to landfills and they remain there for as much as 100 years. They are convenient, but not good for our environment.
We need a change. How? Eco Smart Products are now becoming available in the food service industry. These products are good for the planet. These biodegradable tableware products include plates, take out boxes, storage containers, soup and salad bowls, trays, hot and cold cups, and even trash bags.
The main material used today for disposable tableware is bagasse. Bagasse is the by-product from the sugarcane after the juices are extracted. New crops are planted after the fast growing sugarcane, a viable renewable resource, is harvested for the production.
Products that are created from bagasse are biodegradable. This means that the tableware products will compost or decay in a relative short time. Since the products are made of plant fiber, the products become compost or earth ready in 50 to 180 days.
Containers made from bagasse are quickly replacing the traditional Styrofoam take out boxes and storage containers. What should you do? Next time you receive a Styrofoam product from your favorite restaurant, ask them if it is a biodegradable product. If not, then ask why not? Maybe if enough customers start the initiative of questioning their use of Styrofoam, the restaurant will at least be able to offer their customers an eco friendly alterative. Sometimes YOU need to help in making the change.
