Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a beginner, one thing you'll be aware of is just how quickly you can go through a bag of golf balls, especially on the holes which feature a water hazard. The vast majority of us are not 'made of money' so to speak, and frequently having to buy a bag of brand new balls can be a costly affair.

One can save a considerable amount of money by purchasing pre used golf balls or 'lake balls' instead of whacking numerous brand new balls into that water hazard you just cant get past. Think about it, every ball you whack into the lake will sooner or later be dredged out, cleaned up and resold as a 'lake ball'. So it makes sense to buy a ball which has already been in the lake.

Some people may think that lake balls are substandard in comparison to new golf balls, and to be honest, they are substandard, but only marginally so. Many have only been hit once or twice before being cast into their watery grave. And just in case you're wondering, sitting at the bottom of a lake for a few days, a week or months doesn't have any adverse affect on the integrity of a golf ball.

Of course, some are in better condition than others and I wouldn't blame you for thinking a bag of lake balls is like a lucky dip. However this is not the case as once the balls have been dredged from the bottom of the lake and cleaned up, they are sorted and graded. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. For example, a set of near perfect Titleist 'lake' golf balls is considerably cheaper than their brand new equivalent, yet you'd struggle to notice the difference.

The highest grade is 'pearl quality' and these are closely followed by 'A', 'B' and 'C' graded balls. The lowest graded balls are ideal for practice only and are not recommended for competitive play. Often called 'one shot' practice balls, these are incredibly cheap, costing around 25p each and come in bags of 100. With these lowest graded lake balls you'll be aiming for the lake!

If you are new to the game of golf and cant justify purchasing quality golf balls, opting for cheaper 'non branded' balls instead... give 'branded' lake balls a try and you'll be playing like a pro in no time.
