Kurt Tippett is a very young and promising Australian rules footballer who plays for Adelaide Crows. He was born on May 8, 1987 and usually spots the number four jersey. He was a basketball player in his early playing days and was part of his state’s basketball team before changing to an Australian Rules football player. He played amateur football with Southport before being drafted to the Australian Football League (AFL) in 2006. He was number 32 in the AFL draft of 2006. Proving that sport runs in the family he has a brother, Joel, who also plays in the AFL and was drafted by the Brisbane Lions in 2007.
Professional Career
Kurt eventually made his debut in 2008, and also received the rising star award that same year as a result of his sterling performances. He has been playing both the forward position and as a ruckman. One of the things that fans often criticised about him when he first started playing was the way he kicked the ball at goal. He had recorded so many inaccurate kicks at goal that it became a source of concern for fans of Adelaide Crows. The desire to improve his kicking skills became a major task for him; he had dedicated a significant amount of time during preparations for the new season to overcome this challenge.
All the efforts that were put in by this player who is about 2 metres tall and weighs about 107kg paid off in the new season of 2009. He achieved uncommon and in some situations unprecedented results. For instance, one of the matches where the dividends of his hard work on practising how to kick in front of goal paid off was during the match against Essendon on Sunday 7th June, 2009 where he kicked seven goals in one match. He admitted to having a good match and attributed the goals to hard work during training. He also declared that he was beginning to feel more confident with the ball in front of goal.
The match against Essendon was just the beginning of his goal kicking streak; he had a wonderful season that year with the kind of performance that had been missing at the Adelaide Crows for a long time. He ended that season with 47 goals and also kicked another 8 goals in the finals to finish the season with a total of 55 goals. He scored an amazing goal against Collingwood in the semi-final that almost helped his club carry the day. But alas Collingwood’s forward was swift to restore the lead again in a few seconds. It was a loss that was very painful, as both the fans and player were already looking forward to playing in the AFC finals.
Injury Challenges
The management of Adelaide Crows offered him a three year deal in 2009 which he gladly signed. This prevented the new Gold Coast Suns club from signing him as they were seriously interested in acquiring his services. The contract renewals were announced at the 2009 best and fairest awards of the club. The 2010 season for Kurt was fairly uneventful; unfortunately he had suffered a couple of injuries that seriously affected his performance that year. For example, in one of the matches against Melbourne Demons on Saturday 10th April, 2010 Kurt Tippett and two of his team mates suffered various types of injuries that put the club in a very difficult position. He has been having challenges with injuries even in the current season, but he is optimistic that the results will come eventually within a short time and he has never regretted staying at Adelaide Crows. Most recently he kicked 3 amazing goals to help the Adelaide Crows upset the Sydney Swans on the 2nd of July, 2011.
