If you are a veteran are you taking full advantage of your GI Bill?

Would you be able to describe the distinctions between the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the older Montgomery Bill? Do you know which one of the two you qualify for, one or both and are you using the best one for your educational needs.

The responses to these questions are important since they will be an irrevocable choice of your benefits. Since you clearly want to end up with the highest amount of financial aid that you can, you need to think carefully about which way you are going to go.

The two bills are different in several ways, such as the following.

The Post-9/11 Bill provides for payment to you for educational expenses, e.g. tuition and fees, to a level less than or equal to the expenses at the most expensive state university in the state where you attend an Institute of Higher Education.

Under this Bill you also are entitled to a monthly housing allowance. The payments are based on the housing allowance for an E-5 with dependents and the zip code of the location of the school you will be attending.

There is also a stipend of $1,000 for books and the possibility of $500 for moving expensive if you qualify.

The Montgomery GI Bill is simple a monthly allowance which at the time of writing this was $1,321 for a full time student that has at least 3 years of active service.

At first glance if you qualify for both bills it would look like the Post-9/11 option would provide the most funds, but this really depends on the tuition and fees charged by the school you are attending.

Because you only have one chance to select the option that would pay you the most money, it become very important to talk to the school before you make a choice. Don't forget you will also need to find out what housing expenses are and what your allowance would be under the Post-9/11 option for the zip code of the school, before you can figure this out.

Making the right choice is a lot easier if you attend a school with a long history of supporting the military. These schools understand the different GI Bill benefits and will help you choose the best option.

As a veteran, you have earned these benefits with your service and you and your family should take advantage of them!
