Langkawi gets an eco friendly solar boat operated by JungleWalla Tours
A brand new solar boat named JUNGLEWALLA has arrived on Langkawi Island. The first Commercial Solar boat in Langkawi and Malaysia, the Solar-Electric Outboard is an environmentally friendly motor for boats where noise, fuel and exhaust pollutants are an issue. It is silent in operation; obvious advantages in areas such as waterways where the marine and wild life need to be protected. Other areas such as reservoirs, where nature and tranquility need to be preserved, lagoons and inland waterways, have obvious benefits from using such an outboard. The motors are operated by a 48 volt battery bank which is partially charged by a large array of 4 Solar Panels on each boat, which also act as a sun cover.

Set up in early 1994, JungleWalla is a pioneer of Langkawi Nature Tours, provides wildlife tours to holidaymakers on Langkawi Island. Tours offered include nature walks, bird watching, jungle trekking, biking, kayaking and swimming. The most popular is the Mangrove and Limestone Cruise, taking visitors to explore the mangrove forests and the limestone outcrops of the north east of the island, within the island’s designated Geoparks.

The growing number of tours into the mangrove is having a detrimental impact is a problem JungleWalla trying to address through both the JungleWalla Initiative – a social enterprise running various conservation and CSR activities – and JungleWalla Tours itself.

Irshad Mobarak of JungleWall believed by having the first Solar-Electric Outboard, he would be able to set the trend and hope this will be copied by many other boat and tour operators to convert their boat into Solar-Electric Outboard too.
