GP rep's
Also more grandly called Primary Care Representatives. In the Medical Sales industry primary care tends to refer to GP practices, and secondary care tends to refer to hospitals.
These jobs (GP rep's) would normally only be available in Medical Sales companies that regard GP rep's and Hospital rep's as separate roles. Many companies expect rep's to be active in both roles, and describe their vacancies as being for GP/Hospital rep's.
GP/Hospital rep's
This kind of Medical Sales person will be active in both primary and secondary care situations. He / she would be expected to pass the ABPI examination during his/her first two years in the Medical Sales industry. It provides a scientific foundation for their work in the pharmaceutical industry, and is generally thought to be somewhere near GCE "A" level standard.
Hospital rep's.
These Medical Sales jobs are really for people who are already have an excellent level of product & scientific knowledge, and are familiar with the 'ins-and-outs' of hospital hierarchies. Hospital rep's will be promoting their products to specialists and consultants who are at the top end of the knowledge tree.
Woundcare sales jobs
These are another different kind of Medical Sales jobs, requiring some different skills. The role is centred on selling bandages and dressings via the nursing staff in hospitals. On the one hand it may be easier for them to make appointments to see nursing staff, than to see doctors. But on the other hand the role has a commercial aspect in that they would be expected to negotiate supply contracts with the buyers.
Veterinary sales jobs
Sometimes also referred to in the Medical Sales industry as Vet' rep's. Veterinary practices are nothing like as numerous as GP practices, and tend to cover much larger geographical areas. As a result Vet' rep's have to do a lot of travelling.
Moreover, Vet' practices are are not tax-payer funded, i.e they are private businesses. And as such they will naturally tend to be concerned with profits and losses. The Vet' rep' will therefore be selling into an environment that is very different to the NHS.
Dental sales jobs
Once again, Dental practices are nothing like as numerous as GP practices, and they are largely private. So some of the job prospects for prospective Dental Medical Sales persons will in those respects be similar to those for Vet' rep's.
Some prospective Medical Sales persons may, however, consider it to be an advantage that for dental sales jobs passing the ABPI examination is not essential.
Conclusion
Hopefully this will have been a useful introduction to the various roles within the Medical Sales industry. But further, deeper, research would be recommended before taking the plunge.
