There are browsers and browser plugins that can block advertisements on websites. Some users don't really want to see ads and definitely don't want to deal with annoying ads that cover up the text they are trying to read or popup over the page. Since there are annoying advertising on some sites, there are users who choose to used tools like Ad Block Plus and others which block Java and Flash based ads on pages. There are a variety of reasons for doing so. Are technologies like this hurting online advertisers?
There is a bit of concern here. There are many sites who do offer free services because they are receiving advertising dollars to offer the service for free. If their efforts are hurt, the free service could realistically go away. For the most part, this should not be too much of a concern.
One type of advertising on the internet is performance based. This means that there are no earnings unless there is a product that is actually purchased or a form that is filled out. A user who doesn't want to see an ad at all is not a user who is going to pull out a credit card and make a purchase. This model is not effected at all.
Some advertisers have to pay per view. This means that every impression that is shown to the users the advertiser pays for it. If they can save money on not showing ads to users who don't want to see it, they will get a better return on their money since only users wanting to see ads are the ones exposed to it.
Regardless of Flash and Java being blocked, there are still always going to be text links. Ads can be in images with HTML or a blue link that goes to the offer being made. These can't realistically ever be blocked.
This means that advertisers aren't really going to be hurt too much with this type of ad blocking technology.
