When the malignancy of bones happen it causes bone cancer. The interesting fact about the bone cancer is that the primary type of cancer is very less in number as compared to the other type which is secondary type. This type of bone cancer is called the primary bone cancer. Mostly the children get affected by this type of cancer. The most common type of primary bone cancer is the osterosarcoma which is common in the children, adolescents and the young adults. It is caused in the growing bone tissues. Another type of the primary cancer is the Chondrosarcoma which is caused in the adults. It affects the cartilage of the bones. The other types of the bone cancer are Ewing’s sarcoma, multiple myeloma, osteoclastoma and fibrosarcoma.

Another interesting fact about bone cancer is that most of the cases are the secondary types of bone cancer. These are caused by the metastasis of the cancer of other parts of the body such as thyroid, lungs, and kidneys and prostrates. There are various symptoms of the bone cancer but most of the symptoms are not noticeable in the early stages. The main symptom is pain in the bone and the surrounding area. Initially the pain is a kind of dull ache which is constantly there. Later on the pain is unbearable and the patient feels a hot sensation in the area. Other symptoms are lump or swelling in the area. Fatigue, loss of appetite or weight loss etc. Any continuous pain and abnormality in the physical health must be reported to the doctor as it is very difficult to diagnose the bone cancer with the symptoms. Once diagnosed the treatment depends on the stage of the cancer, the physical health of the person and the severity of the cancer.

The various ways of treatment are-

1. Surgery- The affected area is amputated so that the cancerous growth does not spread to the other tissues around.
2. Chemotherapy- Certain doses of medicines are used to shrink the size of the tumor and finally remove it. Chemotherapy can be used before or after the surgery also.
3. Radiotherapy- Use of high energy X-rays to remove the tumor and the tissues around it.

The interesting fact about bone cancer is that the doctors are unable to specify the preventive measures for it. Only thing which one has to look into is the family health history. If any person in the family has bone cancer then you are on the risk zone.
