An insurance firm has been taken to court as they have refused to make a $10 million payment to the three year old daughter of late actor Heath Ledger.
The insurance company claimed that they believed Heath Ledger’s death to be suspicious, adding that he may have committed suicide. They said that the policy would be nullified if they found that he had taken his own life.
Heath’s daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger was named as the beneficiary in the life assurance policy.
An insurance specialist lawyer is working on behalf of Matilda and is arguing that it is improper for the insurer to be refusing to payout the life insurance policy and then insisting on investigating the possibility of suicide.
Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment earlier this year and it was concluded that his death was as a result of an accidental overdose of painkillers etc.
The prosecuting lawyer has also stated that there is no reason for the insurance company to question the 28-year-olds death, especially considering that the coroner’s report has concluded that the death was accidental.
Heath Ledger wrote a will two years before he had his little girl and so had left his estate to his parents and three sisters. Due to this, Heath’s family have given their inheritance to Matilda saying that this is what Heath would have wanted.
The insurance company who have refused to pay out have said that they cannot discuss the claim due to the very private nature of their business.
