The very basic need of human beings is food and shelter. As true as this is, people sometimes find that simplicity is not always satisfying. At the other end of the ‘need’ spectrum lies luxury, this comes under ‘wants’. Kurumba in Maldives caters to those people who live according to the way they ‘wants’ or in other words, luxuriously. Because no one really needs luxuries… right?
Kurumba is Maldives’ first private island resort. Go for white sand, clear blue waters, generous coconut trees, fine dining under the moonlight – all true expressions of nature. The resort is a habitat for live coral, growing on ancient volcanoes, along with a variety of aesthetically stunning flora and fauna, which only is comprehensible if seen. Over 30 years old, the place has been refurnished in 2004 for a modern, updated new twist. The island is 48-acres in size, every bit classical, yet unique and at the same time true Maldivian to the core. In 2008, Kurumba received the ‘Best Luxury Resort’ award by Trip Advisor.
It is only natural that patrons choose to walk around barefoot. This is a treat for the feet! Speaking of treat, the stomach needs not worry either -- Kurumba has nine different restaurants that serve seven different cuisines. Dining can be private or as a buffet with others. Of course the beach bar also needs mentioning, where live band is like the cherry on top of the cake. As cliché as it sounds, no resort is complete without a spa. At Kumbara, they believe in nurturing the inner sanctuary of peace where wellbeing, happiness and growth are cultivated. A reflection pond of healing waters, meditation pavilions, a gymnasium, an aroma steam room and ornamental pools are designed to do just that. Then there is always the generic massage, guaranteed to make anyone feel royal.
For those who do not like being massaged, there is always the raw deals – windsurfing, kite surfing, fun and motor sports, kayaking, wind surfing and more. Another important promotional point for the folks at Kumara is the popular Renewal of Vows that couples usually do at the resort. This is usually kicked off with the Absolute Spa Ritual, where a massage and facial are involved. The couple is to wear traditional Maldivian outfits while drums play in the background. Friends and family of the original wedding are this time replaced by the sun, sea and sand as vows are read. The couple is given a hand-made certificate, fed some wedding cake, and escorted into the sunset by a cruise. The only thing left to do is sip champagne and watch the dolphins. As if this was not perfect enough, the cruise will then stop in the middle of the sea, anchored.
A special menu is cooked for the couple to enjoy in solitude. Back at the villa, a bath is prepared, followed by a romantic rose covered bed all ready. Champagne breakfast for two in bed awaits the next morning.
