Trucks transport goods all across the country to different businesses, companies and government facilities. Trucks that carry a lot of weight and are very long are more prone to be involved in accidents. When they are in an accident, it is usually a serious one. If there are materials that can cause a hazard, that makes the situation even worse. In the United States alone, there are more than a half million truck accidents each year. These accidents cause at least 130,000 injuries and about 5,000 fatalities.
Did you know that three fourths of the truck accidents are not the fault of truck drivers? The fault lies with the drivers in regular vehicles. Some drivers in regular vehicles don’t understand how to drive around trucks, especially large and longer ones. Even though the truck drivers are experienced, they have more blind spots and sometimes cannot stop quickly to avoid hitting another vehicle.
There are times when truck drivers are negligent and cause accidents. Most of the time this comes from being fatigued. They also get stressed because they have to make their deadline to get to a certain location on time. Either they will really put their pedal to the metal or they will keep going without breaks. Some of them are just as negligent as the drivers in the smaller vehicles. They can also experience a mechanical failure or a tire blowout.
The Federal Government has cracked down on the trucking industry. They have made them modify their laws to require that truckers have the right credentials to drive a truck. They have also changed it where truck drivers are required to get rest between their shifts. It can decrease drivers from being stressed and fatigued. Doing this can decrease the number of accidents that happen on the road.
People who were injured in a trucking accident can get compensated for their injuries and damage to their property (i.e. vehicles). However, there has to be proof that there was negligence on the truck driver. Truck drivers are supposed to drive with care and obey all of the rules of the road. It’s possible that the injured can also seek compensation for damages from the trucker’s company if they were employed.
