A total of 53 percent of all Illinois auto accidents were caused by a vehicle leaving the road, while 26 percent took place at an intersection. There were a total of 13 percent that were fatalities with large vehicles and trucks, while 209 deaths were bicyclists and pedestrians. Of these 1,453 deaths, half were passengers in a car, while 23 percent were in a light truck. Alcohol was a factor in half of all of the state’s auto accidents. Speed was seen as a factor in a total of 39 percent of the state’s deaths which ultimately cost the state a total of $1,568 million.
In 2008, the state seen 1,115 traffic accidents daily, with 11 injuries an hour and 3 fatalities a day according to the Department of Transportation. The Illinois State Police stated that they want to drop the totals below one thousand, and in 2009 was one of only 10 states that reported more than one thousand fatalities annually. Of these accidents, a total of 77 percent were passenger cars with 17 percent being buses or large trucks, and 4 percent motorcycles. The majority of all fatalities were found with passenger cars and pickup trucks, making up a total of 1,050 deaths. There were a total of 113 trucking accidents and 131 motorcycle accidents.
As of November 2009, there were only 781 fatalities, making the State Police’s wish of the dropping number a reality. However, the two worst months for auto accidents and fatalities are November and December, due to holiday travel and more congested roadways along with weather changes and road hazards.
In 2007, there were a total of 422,778 accidents where a total of 103,156 injuries were seen. A total of 1,248 fatalities were recorded and in 33 percent of these, seatbelts were not used or were used incorrectly. Over 56 percent of these fatalities took place on urban roads, and a total of 1,158 crashes happened every day state wide. This amounted to 12 injuries an hour and 3 fatalities a day. There were a total of 124 people killed in tractor trailer accidents, and a total of 4,819 motorcycle accidents throughout the year.
