ISO 9001 certifications, titled "Information Security Management - Specification With Guidance for Use", is the replacement for BS7799-2. It is intended to provide the foundation for third party audit, and is 'harmonized' with other management standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The fundamental purpose of the ISO 27001 standard is to assist in establishing and maintaining an effectual information management system, using an incessant improvement approach.

The 2000 version of the standard (ISO 9001:2000) sought to make a radical change in thinking. This third edition makes this more visible and so reduced the emphasis on having documented procedures if clear evidence could be presented to show that the process was working well. Expectations of continual process improvement and tracking customer satisfaction were also made explicit in this revision. A new set of eight core quality management principles, designed to act as a common foundation for all standards relating to quality management, were also introduced; namely:

5. A system approach to management
6. Continual improvement
7. A factual approach to decision making
8. Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

The fourth and latest edition of the standard (ISO 9001:2008) was published on November 14th 2008. This revision contains minor amendments only. The aim of this revision is to clarify existing requirements and to improve consistency of approach with other management standards, like ISO 14001:2004.

Also referred to as "best practice benchmarking" or "process benchmarking", it is a process used in management and particularly strategic management, in which organizations evaluate various aspects of their processes in relation to best practice companies' processes, usually within a peer group defined for the purposes of comparison. This then allows organizations to develop plans on how to make improvements or adapt specific best practices, usually with the aim of increasing some aspect of performance. Benchmarking may be a one-off event, but is often treated as a continuous process in which organizations continually seek to improve their practices.
