Before we try to start working out our BMI, let's first discover what BMI really is. BMI, short for “body mass index", is a calculator that's used to decide if a person is at a health weight for his or her height. It was designed some where between 1830 and 1850 by a man called Adolphe Quetelet who was not only a mathematician but also a scientist. Even though it's has been almost 200 years since Quetelet created the first BMI, it is used today almost exactly as it was when it was first invented.
The BMI isn't the last word in whether or not someone is at a healthy weight, it’s is usually the first device that often used to determine if a persons is overweight, or not. The BMI doesn't differentiate weight from muscle and weight from fat so it does not work well for very muscular people like body builders and other athletes. But for the average person, the BMI is a pretty accurate gauge of whether we're a normal weight, overweight or under weight.
Calculating one's BMI isn't hard once you get to grips with the formula. The simplest way to describe it is: “kg/m2", which simple means weight divided by height squared, or you take your height in meters and square it which means you take the number of meters times itself. All you do then is divide that number into your weight in kilograms. So a man or woman who's six-feet tall stands about 1.82 meters. To get 1.82 meters squared, you simply multiply 1.82 times 1.82, which equals 3.31. Now, we convert weight to kilograms.
If someone weigh 150 pounds, that's about 68 kilo's. To find the BMI of someone about six-feet tall and weights around150 pounds, or who stands 1.82 meters tall who weights 68 kilo's, we divide the weight by the height squared, or 68 divided by 3.31. That gives us roughly 20.45. This person would be classified as “normal health weight”. How can I tell that?
Well! A BMI of 18.5 or below would indicate a person is underweight. The normal weight parameters for someone who stands six-foot tall range from 18.5 to 24.9. All overweight people have a BMI of 25 to 29.9. A BMI index of 30 plus indicates obesity. So anyone with a BMI index of 31 is in the obese range, but not by much. By re-calculating BMI again with a different set of weights, you can see that a dieter would only need to lose about 5 kilo’s or approximately 11 pounds, to no longer be classed as obese, but merely overweight. And a loss of 15 kilograms, or about 33 pounds, will class this person within a normal health weight range. Using a BMI calculator to work out how much weight one should get rid of can be a great help for someone on a diet and who may not be sure how much weight they should lose to get into a healthy weight range.
I write to educate me and woman regarding health and dieting methods from the:- cabbage soup diet, to the 500 calorie diet ,including supplements like the Acai berry, Maqui berry and Goji berries ect,.
