As someone who interviews applicants o a daily basis, sometimes interviewing more than one applicant at a time, it is easy for Recruiters to fall into the trap of not preparing their shortlisted candidates for the clients interview. Many times Recruiters see this as a foregone conclusion that “you know what your doing” and are then miffed when the client feedback is that their star candidate didn’t come across well.

Use this simple list of pointers to help you through the interview process, they are not hard and fast rules, neither are they guarantees for success but rather a list of observations and notes built from years of interviewing and being interviewed.

Remember interviewing well is not a black art and with a few simple pointers everyone can come across as competent when faced with a potential employer.

FIRST AND FOREMOST
Remember that around half of the clients interviewing are just as nervous as you if not more so, they have more face to loose if they can not answer one of your questions, They need to stay in control, be organized, formal, very PC and not show any weakness whilst at the same time coming across as someone you should want to work for.

PREPARE
Unfortunately your appearance can affect the interviewer’s opinion. Take care to make the right impression.
Be smart, clean and well groomed
Unless advised otherwise wear business attire i.e. dark suit / skirt, blouse
Limit make-up, perfume / aftershave and jewelry (it will only distract)
Wear something different to a second interview

ITEMS
Copy of your CV
Portfolio
References / referrals
Examination certificates
Take just one bag/briefcase/folder

GETTING THERE
Take clear travel directions
Allow plenty of time for unexpected delays
Arrive early (Ten to 15 minutes)
Switch off Mobile Phone

INTERVIEW
The interviewer is often nervous too.

Boost your confidence by
A confident handshake
Stay calm don’t fidget
Be polite
Never smoke or eat
Be yourself, be honest
Show a real interest in the job
Don’t answer a question you don’t understand, ask for clarification
Speak clearly with positive words

Prepare some answers to common questions
Find out the answers to these questions beforehand as you may be asked

What do you know about our company?
What experience do you have that would make you a success?
What are your ambitions?
What job have you enjoyed most and least? Why?
What have you done that shows initiative?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
Why are you seeking new employment?
Why do you want this position?

Questions to ask the interviewer

You may like to ask
Who will I report to?
Who will I be working with?
What training opportunities are there?
Why has the job become available?
When will you make your decision?

An important question to ask at the end of the interview
Do you have any reservations about me at this time?

FINALLY

Make them remember you positively
Do not be afraid to re express your interest in the position
Smile and thank them for seeing you
Tell them how you look forward to seeing them again
Shake hands (firmly!)
