Being a DJ is one of the most enjoyable job on earth. You can play with music, meet people and be in party mood all the time. But a good DJ is not made in one day. Dedication, determination and passion are needed to be a good one. This is not just your spur of the moment interest. It takes time before one could hone the craft. When I was a teenager I was fond of going to clubs, etc., I even fancied myself becoming a DJ. They simply amazed me. How they could automatically play and seemed to wow the crowds naturally. I know underneath it all is hard work. One benefit is, you get to know a lot of people and travel. In the end, the interest simply faded away. I guess the calling wasn't mine to keep as I pursued other interests.
A DJ is always the heart of the party. Weddings, debut parties or a simple gathering, a DJ will always be there. I wonder how they become one. Is there any special quality they possessed that makes them a good DJ? It seemed whenever they play music they are baring their soul out. I have a friend who is a DJ and told me the so called secret. It really was not a secret and here are some suggestions to follow if you want to pursue a career in music mixing. Know somebody from within. You need to know a DJ and make him a mentor. Talk to them and ask anything you want to learn. You can apply for apprenticeship, for free though.
Apply the lessons and develop your own style. Learn about mixers, needles, cartridges and the like. Learn how to scratch. A good ear for music and knowing different genres is an added plus. Collect a good number of Love songs, hip hop, rock, etc. Store them in an mp3 and collect good CD. You can save them for demos and future use. You don't have to buy your own equipment while starting out. You may rent or borrow from someone who has it. And never forget to advertise. Hand out calling cards, fliers, place ad in the paper, and be visible in parties, functions and other occasions. Connections is an added plus. And once you pleased your crowd, words of mouth will surely have a ripple effect.
And as they say, PRACTICE MAKES IT PERFECT! Constant learning and updating oneself with the current trend in music will let you stay in the business long enough. And remember to keep your feet planted on the ground.
