Did you know that there are lottery wagers that you shouldn't waste your money on? There are millions of garbage wagers out there. But, let's face it, taking out the garbage isn't a favorite pass time.

Some people fuss over about having to do it. Although few in number, they adamantly refuse to accept the concept of doing this. They do this in spite of the best lottery software analysis available and overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They refuse to allow simple things like logic and reason get in their way.

Some of this garbage can be identified as unbalanced wagers. The name Balanced Wager originates with the teeter-totter found on any playground. Ahhhhh, that should bring back fond memories. But, then your buddy hopped off to quick and you didn't speak for a week. Fun on the teeter-totter comes from maintaining balance.

Here's a lesson we can apply to the lottery. Too many low numbers in the wager and the wager tilts to one side. A wager tilts the other way when too many high numbers are used. This teeter-totter analogy can save you money.

Two Kinds of Trash

Fortunately, there is an easy way to find such wagers so that a computer can help us throw out the trash. Add the numbers and find the sum. Let's use the Lotto Texas 6/54 lottery as an example. The lowest sum is 21 for the wager 1-2-3-4-5-6. This is the absolute minimum for a lottery where 6 numbers are drawn. The highest sum is 309 for the wager 49-50-51-52-53-54. For any 6/54 lottery, this is the maximum sum.

Here's where it gets interesting. The vast majority of lottery drawings turn out to be Balanced Wagers; neither tilting to far to one side or the other. Playing wagers near the extremes is not very effective use of your lottery dollars.

Still not convinced? Still don't believe me? That's OK. Let's look at a graph. This graph shows how many wagers have sums from 21 through 309. Using a hand calculator is out of the question unless you're willing to wait 50 years to see this graph. But, a computer and some good lottery software can show us what we want to see in seconds. After one look at this graph, skeptics become either catatonic or believers.

Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to put graphs in this article but, you all know what it looks like. It is referred to as a bell shaped curve.

To the far left are wagers with the lowest sums and on the far right are wagers with the highest sums. In the center, between the two extremes is a large hump which give the appearance of a large bell from which the graph gets it's name. The far right and left of a bell shaped curve represent events that have very low probabilities of ever occurring. These are mathematical facts, not fiction, and should very effectively, quiets even the most vehement skeptic.

In fact, 90% of all possible wagers fall between 30% and 70% of the graph. Therefore, simple common sense would dictate that an effective lottery strategy would be to spend your lottery budget on wagers that fall between 30% and 70%.

Doing so accomplishes two things:

1. You avoid low probability wagers.
2. The winning numbers are most likely going to be found in the middle of the graph; the place where your money is concentrated.

If you think this is all just a theoretical exercise and doesn't apply in the real world, think again. Plotting the balanced sums of the actual winning numbers for Lotto Texas forms a perfect bell shaped curve. Nearly all of the lottery jackpot winners are found right in the middle of the graph.

I know that some of you think I picked Lotto Texas because it proves my point. This is true for ALL lotteries. Any US or Canadian lottery will give the same result.

Here it is in terms that anyone can understand. You have a choice of two different lakes. One has 90% of all the fish in it and the other lake has only 10% of the fish. So, if you're going fishin', which lake are you going to drop your line in?

Warning: You won't catch any marlin fishing in a mud puddle.
