Up and down the country, every night, pubs fill with the sound of cult classics, big band sounds and pop chart acoustic covers that charm and offend the resident boozers. The great British institution that is the pub band has been going since before the Beatles were the size of bugs and is still going strong today. But the thing is, you may have a range of bands that come to your local whether you like it or not that play their hearts out to try and entertain everyone present, but have you ever wondered how your average pub band manages to make a living?

Only play for money

Obviously they get paid for their gigs, but they have to be playing for free for quite a long time before they are good enough to be paid. Your town may indeed be equally awash with teen rock bands pumping out clichéd riffs and covers of their favourite metal bands that will happily fill your pub with noise for an hour, just for the thrill of playing live and take a paying slot away from your local pub band. What pubs bands have to do is make sure they are good enough before they come, produce a night of entertainment that is not too loud, play a set that is filled with tunes people want to hear and make it through the night without causing any trouble. Pub landlords will appreciate this and ask them back ahead of a pub band that is too loud, too obscure or one that pees on the pool table during a particularly raucous guitar solo. Once you reach this stage you should be able to only play for money.

Sell merchandise

One handy route for pub bands that get reasonably well known is to sell merchandise. This can include things like CDs of their music, a band slogan t shirt with their name and some kind of reasonably offensive message on it, or maybe just a range of mens funny t shirts that have nothing to do with the band but they can still sell to people in the pub.

Travel

Once a pub band has a regular slot at their local pub they need to start to branch out into other pubs to make sure they make enough money to live on. By travelling to neighbouring towns and making a name for themselves there, they will increase their regular gigs and increase their profits. It's not easy but then rock and roll isn't supposed to be.
