The most critical aspect to the success of any online business is understanding the role of keywords
and why they are so important in your quest to make online money. Why is it that some people make thousands of dollars why some people struggle to break even while most people are doomed to failure from the very start?
What we learn from Internet marketing is that success is not necessarily achieved by the person with the best product or the person who works the hardest. In fact, what is so interesting in many cases it takes the same amount of work to build an unsuccessful business as it does to build a successful one.
What determines weather you succeed or fail can be contributed to the following two factors:
1. The market you choose
2. The Keywords you target
If you get these two factors right your online business might produce an income stream that can totally transform your life. However, if you get one of these factors wrong more than likely you will join the vast majority of people who make no money online.
The main reason people fail is that they do not spend the time upfront to do the market research necessary to see if their business idea is viable. Instead, what typically happens is - they rush in, select a random niche, they target random keywords, and then just hope for the best. This is without question a recipe for disaster. Look familiar?
In contrast, the people who succeed online take a very different approach. They research their market carefully. They identify profitable areas. They target specific, relevant keywords and they follow a plan.
Which group are you in?
How then do we properly conduct our keyword research. Is there a magic formula we can follow to guarantee our success? The first rule in our formula is Relevance. If the content of your website is not relevant to the keywords you targeted then the people who visit your site will probably not be interested in what they find. It is important to understand that the secret to online success is not just getting traffic to your site but rather getting Targeted traffic. Therefore you should always start by identifying keywords that are most relevant to the content on your site.
Next we need to find keywords that have sufficient traffic to be worth targeting. Certain keyword phrases may generate significant traffic to a particular niche while other keywords produce very little traffic. What is interesting it is estimated that over 90% of all keywords have insignificant levels traffic. That’s why most people starting out select random keywords and end up receiving very little traffic. It is no wonder they fail.
The third factor in keyword research is Competition. I am sure you would agree, one of the best ways to obtain a steady stream of traffic is to get front page ranking on Google for particular keyword phrases. The problem is there are only 10 listings available on the front page for each keyword phrase and there are many websites competing for these ten positions.
There are two important aspects of competition you need to consider. The first is the amount of competition. This gives us an indication of how many people are competing for a particular keyword phrase. Obviously some keywords have high levels of competition while others have low levels of competition. The second aspect we need to consider is the strength of competition. The number one reason why people fail online is because they never take the time to access the level and strength the competition associated with the keywords they are targeting. Most of the time people simply select a niche and start creating content hoping that Google will some how find their site and magically give them a front page ranking. Unfortunately this rarely happens.
What is sad a lot of people work very hard creating a great website but fail to get sufficient traffic because they entered a very competitive niche and the competition is simply too strong. The real secret to success online is to only target keywords that give you a good chance of achieving front page ranking.
Finally the last step in your keyword research is to determine the commerciality of your keywords.
Commerciality is the measure of the potential profitability of a keyword phrase. Imagine after setting up your website, you do your keyword research and make sure your keywords are relevant to your site, have high levels of traffic, and has an acceptable level of competition. You then optimize your website for this particular phrase and actually achieve a front page listing on Google. As a result, your website attracts a large number of visitors each day. Congratulations, you did everything right. The only problem is, no one seems to be buying anything! What is happening?
The reason could be that you targeted a keyword phrase that has a low level of commerciality. Before you target a keyword phrase for your online business it is absolutely critical that you check the commerciality of the keywords you are investigating. This could be the defining difference between achieving the success you have been striving for or the ultimate failure dooms most internet marketers.
As you can see there is a lot of planning that needs to go into your keyword research in order for you to be successful with your online business. Knowing what information you need is important. Knowing how to obtain all this information is invaluable. You will find there are many tools on the internet that can assist you in your keyword research. I have researched many of these tools and can help you in this area.
To your success,
