Choosing the perfect motorcycle can be a stressful ordeal, especially if you are new to riding. You’ve got to take style, riding ability and budget into account when making your decision. If you aren’t sure where to begin, just take a look at my suggestions below.
1. If you are a novice bike rider, then choose a small bike to start out with. Stay below 250 cc until you’ve ridden for at least a few hundred miles. In most cases, I wouldn’t suggest upgrading in size until you’ve ridden a motorcycle for at least a year.
2. When choosing your bike, make sure that it is the right size for you body type. Your feet should be able to comfortable reach the ground when you are seated.
3. If you’re looking at used motorcycles, make sure that the headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are function properly. Also make sure that the horn also works. Do not purchase the bike unless all of these parts are working.
4. If you are thinking of purchasing a motorcycle over state lines, you will want to check on the specific code specifications for your state. It can vary greatly between states, so be sure to take this into account when importing your new motorcycle.
5. You may be tempted to upgrade your new motorcycle once you’ve made the purchase, however you should keep in mind that most states have several laws in place that will prevent you from legally making these upgrades. For instance, if you are thinking of upgrading your exhaust system in California, you aren’t allowed to have cutout, bypass or similar devices.
6. If you purchase your bike out of state, make sure that you register it in your own state of residence. Each state has their own unique requirements so make sure that you have everything in order before heading out on your bike.
