The latest buzz from Google is that it will introduce a plug-in that will allow users to escape the tracking done by Google analytics. The record is used to help website owners document the number of visitors visiting their site and it is further used for developing business strategies. Analytics is also an integral component in assessing the effectiveness of the performance of AdWords and AdSense campaigns.
The news has come to surface after Amy Chang, group product manager for Google Analytics made the disclosure in a blog. It is widely believed that the initiative is a result of some hue and cry that has been raised in the wake of some privacy issue related to Google Buzz. The privacy issue that had emerged was that Gmail Buzz users’ contacts were getting displayed in their Google profiles.
Chan in the blog wrote that there has been a conscious effort to provide more options to users on the ways their data can be recorded in the Google Analytics and the best solution lies in development of a global browser based plug-in that allows users to opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics.
The biggest question that needs to be answered now is that how much will it affect the success of Google AdWords and Google AdSense campaigns? Industry experts believe that the trending data will remain valuable and Web analytics experts will gradually learn to quantify and manage if there is any resulting bias.
It must also be noted that many users are not even aware of Google Analytics; therefore the development is widely viewed in the light that such features would only consolidate Google’s stand of being an entity that indulges only in fair dealing.
Let us not forget that Google Analytics also depends on browser cookies and IP addresses for detecting visitors to a site and a user could always escape this by either disabling cookies or enabling JavaScript on their browsers. But web analytics had never faced an issue till date because users hardly get into such nitty grittiest.
The feature will be introduced soon and only then we will be able to assess the actual consequences
