Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) produces its impressive results in a shorter time than conventional talk therapies based on traditional psychiatric concepts. Conventional therapies attempt to primarily impart an understanding of an emotionally charged problem, however, that is not true healing. EFT is different in that its goal to eliminate the negative energy associated with the distressing memory, and this is often done in rather prompt fashion.

The actual number of EFT sessions needed to neutralize the distressing energy of a particular problem is different in each case. Sometimes, conditions that appear easy and direct on the surface will require longer care since they can be complex in actuality. On the other hand, those conditions that initially appear complex and convoluted can sometimes be resolved promptly due to simple associations that are discovered early in care.

EFT has built an impressive reputation for achieving amazing results in chronic and longstanding problems that were resistant to traditional talk therapies, sometimes in just one session. However, most often an average problem requires several sessions for complete resolution, as determined by its complexity, not by its apparent severity. If the core issue of a particular problem is a unique and isolated event (a car accident), this often can be dealt with in one or two EFT sessions. More complex and prolonged issues with multiple causations, with interplay of many aspects, (low self esteem, anger or depression) may all take many more sessions for complete resolution.

Before starting care there is no way to accurately predict or know the number of EFT therapy sessions needed. The use of averages might guide or approximate care, but nothing more than that. The best way to come to a closer idea for future care is to apply an EFT session, and in this way gauge the true complexity of the condition.

The EFT benefits of personal relief and emotional recovery are often incremental. Typically, progress can be felt with each session, as well as the awareness that more EFT work needs to be done with other related issues that have not been addressed. Like peeling an onion, EFT confronts each layer of a problem in the order it is presented. Just as some onions have fewer or more layers than others, and so it goes with doing EFT. Each EFT session is a learning experience about the art and practice of EFT for both practitioner and client. Over time, both learn more about the process of EFT therapy.

EFT often will reverse and neutralize a chronic emotional problem that has remained defiant to many years of conventional psychoanalysis. Sometimes this can take a dozen EFT sessions over a few months. Some might say that this is a fast rate of recovery, while others might lament it took more than one EFT session. Perhaps that is the problem of EFT tapping therapy having a reputation built on the rapid progress known as the “one minute wonder.”
