A certificate is generated on your server as a 'Certificate Signing Request' and must be presented to a company known as a 'Certificate Authority' responsible for authenticating SSL certificates. Certificates can vary in price because the more expensive ones require more information and theoretically offer higher security. Higher quality certificates are generated using more rigorous standards and are regarded as safer for everyone. Browsers automatically recognize well known certificates. However when they come across one they do not recognize they typically generate a warning message. This is a deterrent lowering your number of visitors and your revenue by denying visitors the chance to see your services.
Generating your CSR differs depending on your operating system. Windows Servers is a typical example. Start by opening the Microsoft Management Console and expanding the Internet Information Server folder showing the default website. You choose Properties then Directory Security. In the Secure Communications area click the Key Manager Button, then right click the WWW icon and select Create New Key. Work through the configuration options. Choose 'Put the request in a file' and continue with the dialog. When you have filled out the contact information choose the Key menu and select Finish. The Key will be generated and displayed under the WWW icon but it will have an orange slash indicating it is not complete.
Retrieve the text file created and follow the steps requested by your CA and you will receive a text file containing the 'signed' certificate. You are now ready to install SSL certificate. This is installed in the Key Manager by clicking on the Key Icon you created and following the instructions.
