After ten years of marketing online, I have pretty much seen it all. For every legitimate business opportunity I have found, there are at least an equal amount of scams floating around. This of course makes many people extremely jaded and wary of most business opportunities. However, it doesn't have to be this way.
One way to weed out the scams is to do your due diligence and investigate each opportunity thoroughly. While this doesn't ensure you won't become a victim of a scam, it definitely will lower your risks.
To help you decide if an opportunity is legit or a possible scam, always use the checklist below:
- Check to see if they have been reported to the BBB
This is the ultimate source to find out if a business opportunity you are pursuing is legitimate or not. If a company has been repeatedly reported to the BBB, then obviously you should avoid working with them.
- Is the company professional?
When you speak with their representatives either by email or on the phone, do they answer your questions promptly and to your satisfaction?
When something is making you weary, there is usually a good reason for it. Always trust your feelings over any excitement you feel about the opportunity.
- Check for any testimonials they might have
If there are any testimonials with contact information, don't be afraid to contact these people and ask questions. If the opportunity is as legit as the company makes it sound, they shouldn't have any problems producing such testimonials.
When a company is unable to produce any testimonials on their behalf, don't hesitate to ask why that is the case.
- Always trust yourself and use common sense
Get out a pen and paper and make a list of pros and cons for every opportunity, and always use your best judgment when rating each. Remember, if an opportunity seems like it is too good to be true, then I can almost guarantee you that it is.
Since it is impossible to tell which business opportunities are totally legitimate, it is always a good idea to do your due diligence using the list above. Don't allow the excitement you feel about the new opportunity override any concerns you might have.
Usually there is a reason you are feeling uncomfortable. I would suggest you never discount these kinds of feelings. This is your time and money you are investing, so never be afraid to scrutinize each opportunity as closely as possible.
