The type of exercise you should do all depends on you and what you enjoy doing. You will also need to consider exercises you absolutely hate and how much you can afford to spend on membership fees and necessary equipment for your chosen exercise.
If you choose something you really don’t enjoy, you aren't going to keep doing it for a long period of time. Give it some thought - if you don't like jogging, you just aren't going to get up at 6 AM and go running. If you hate the thoughts of going to the gym, you aren’t going to go three times a week. Chances are you will give up very quickly and this will damage your self esteem. The key is to find an exercise you enjoy, and will feel motivated to do on a regular basis. You may hate running but enjoy going cycling. Even dancing to your favorite music or kicking a ball around with your kids is exercise!
If you can’t think of an exercise you enjoy, then at least choose one you hate the least! For many people, this will be walking. Walking is great exercise, as it suits all levels of fitness and abilities. Anyone can start a walking program at any time and increase their mileage and speed as their fitness improves. Walking is also a social exercise, as it isn't difficult to find a training partner or friend to chat with while you exercise. Walking with a partner will also make time go by faster.
No matter what exercise you choose, you should always start at a low level of intensity and build it up over a period of weeks. If you start off too hard, you could end up with an injury which will bring your exercise regime to an abrupt halt for a while.
If you are really unfit or haven’t exercised before, you should start off by walking for 10 minutes each day. Then increase it by 5 minutes every fortnight. To make things more interesting, you should try walking a different route every few days. You could also roster a different friend to walk with you each time. You may be keen at first, but don’t try to exercise every day; give yourself a day off every few days to allow your body chance to adjust and repair itself.
If walking isn't your thing, then you may want to try a gym. They have loads of different equipment to try and generally have trainers on hand to answer any questions you may have. Check out a few gyms near you before you commit yourself.
How do they treat you when you go, and start asking questions? If they aren't willing to treat you well before you join, then they may not change once you are a member. You should also make sure that the equipment they use is well maintained. It's easy to find out, as all you have to do is listen to the machines. If they squeak a lot, look shabby or make excessive noise, then chances are they aren't being taken care of.
If you still aren't sure what you should do, then try communal activities such as tennis or aerobics classes. Both are good social activities, and you can even meet new friends. Tennis is great for fitness although it isn't ideal for someone who is just starting an exercise plan. Whatever you choose, the more you enjoy it the more you will want to make it a part of your life.
