Exercise is essential if you want to lose weight, but did you know that that certain ways of exercising can burn more calories?

Every movement your body makes uses energy in the form of calories; however, all movement is not created equal- certain movements burn more calories than others. By changing the way we move during exercise, we can increase the amount of calories we burn. Generally the faster our movements are the more calories they will burn.

We can achieve this by choosing faster paced exercises such as running, martial arts and aerobics. The increased effort will also raise your metabolic rate, so that your body will burn more calories on a daily basis, even on days you don’t exercise. Slower paced, lower intensity exercises such as walking and jogging at a constant pace will improve your health, but do not raise the metabolism sufficiently to burn more calories.

If you like walking or jogging, try upping the intensity every so often; sprint as fast as you can for one minute and then walk or jog slowly for five minutes to recover. Do this several times, and increase the number of sprints you do each time. This is known as interval training, and is a proven way to fire your metabolism and burn fat.

If you enjoy going to a class, choose a faster paced one which will get your body moving more. If you prefer to use the aerobic equipment at the gym, increase the intensity every so often and move faster for short bursts of time.
Try exaggerating the movements you make during exercise as this will help to increase calorie expenditure.

Strength training builds muscle, which also increases the metabolic rate and encourages the body to burn more calories as muscles need more calories for their daily function. You can use either machines or free weights, but make sure have proper instruction.

If you are new to exercising or have been working out at a lower intensity level, don't try to increase the intensity by too much straight away or you may injure yourself. Build up the intensity slowly and don't try to push your body too hard too soon.
