Let’s face it; people that are usually on the cover of magazines have been touched up in Photoshop or some other photo editing program. I am not trying to impose that they need to be touched up, but in an almost unfortunate matter, it’s done to please the viewer’s eye.

When did all this retouching begin to take place? I suppose around the time that Photoshop came out is when it really started taking off. But don’t you feel almost lied to when you pick up a magazine cover and see this flawless model with no lines on their face and the whitest teeth you have ever seen? I know I do. Granted, most women wear make up but let’s be realistic here, we all have flaws and those flaws are sometimes shown in the photos that are taken of us. So how is it that these people always look impeccable?

It’s as though you can walk in and say to the photo editor, okay here’s the deal, I want to look 20lbs. skinnier than what I actually am, this facial blemish needs to be gone, my tan line needs to vanish, I want one eye this color and the other one this, and the list goes on. With the capabilities of Photoshop you can do anything ever imagined and what is reality appears to be thrown out the window. Photoshop is an amazing program, don’t get me wrong.

It’s no wonder that America has eating disorders and depressed men and women everywhere. We are constantly searching for the new diet fad, such as the HCG diet, or the new product to give us soft skin. Most of us feel like we need to look flawless like these models that we see on the covers of magazines in order to be noticed or to be appreciated. What we need to remember though is that 98% of the time those people really don’t look like that. Sure, they are beautiful individuals, but just like everyone else, they have flaws. They are touched up so much sometimes that you can hardly even recognize which actor/actress/model it is.

I compiled a list of the top ten most touched up parts of people on magazine covers.

1. Teeth-made to look brighter and straighter
2. Boobs-usually made to look bigger and perkier
3. Arms-made to look skinnier, smoother, and less hairy
4. Lips-made to look fuller and shinier
5. Legs-made to look longer and skinnier
6. Face-made to look flawless with an even skin tone and natural glow
7. Hair-made to look shinier, often longer and smoother
8. Cheekbones-made to look like we have more than we do
9. Clothes-made to look different colors or patterns
10. Make up-made to look flawless, no smears, even, often intensified

Please remember people that the word real is in reality for a reason. The reality is that many of us long for these traits with our own bodies; but until Photoshop or Illustrator comes out with the “latest version” of technology that allows us to have it all without the use of computers, we need to accept ourselves, flaws in all.
