Often misunderstood, black metal comes from the roots of old school thrash metal and comes in waves. From its origin, black metal has often attracted to dark and disillusioned youth looking for an outlet for internal conflicts with religion and so-called popular culture. Within the scene a low subset of its listeners has aligned themselves with National Socialism and devoted acts such as homicide and church burnings (it has been said the number could be as high as 50 or more churches).
Differences in Black Metal Beliefs
Possibly the most popular of this subset is the band VargVikernes and Mayhem. In the year of 1993 Øystein Aarseth, owner of record label Deathlike Silence, was killed by Vikernes. Vikernes was confined of murder later that year. As things have changed for the Black Metal community, Vikernes anti-religious position and outbreak reflected the genre as a whole. The black metal culture has many disputes, views and beliefs that any culture would have.
Styles of Black Metal
Bathory and Cruachan, a Viking lore and mythology group, pioneered out to the metal community and made a great affect for black metal. These "folk" and "viking" metal bands use more traditional folk instruments to compliment the frequent eltectric guitar, drums and bass rather than the typical norms and opts. Normal black metal includes bands that have experimented in ambient, symphonic and doom metal. Groups have pushed the envelope with other music like old 80's punk movement (crust) gothic and even industrial influences.
Black Metal Lives
Metal fans want an outlet for their creative thinking and individualism, and with romanticized or demonized black metal in its lating effect on the world and in the metal community. Black metal will continue to grow and become a stronger genre in the metal community. Black metal has always been a experimental genre of music. Being shocking and controversal with bands like Venom and Celtic Frost to its present and future, but black metal lives!
