Popular horse books that have inspired us
Some of the most popular tales from our childhood continue to be read and loved by a new generation. You may remember some of these four-legged favourites:
• Black Beauty—Written by Anna Sewell in 1877, this story was an early advocate of animal welfare. Narrated by the horse Black Beauty, it gives a clear, simple perspective on the effect of cruelty and kindness towards people as well as horses.
• The Black Stallion—A series of stories written by Walter Farley, and partly co-authored by his son Steven, the story of the Black Stallion begins in 1941 and tells of the unusual friendship between a prize-stallion and a boy who form a life-long bond of trust and affection. The history and pedigree of this stallion is intertwined with mystery, intrigue and great love.
• Young adult series - The Saddle Club—A series of stories developed in 1987 by author Bonnie Bryant who specifically crafted these tales for young teenage horse lovers. It follows the adventures of three girls and their passion for horses. Pine Hollow—a continuation of The Saddle Club, where the main characters have grown to young adulthood. These stories highlight the closeness and interdependency between humans and horses.
• Misty of Chincoteague—Written in 1947 by Marguerite Henry, Misty is based on the true story of a pony from the island of Chincoteague in the US. The story brings to life the joys and tribulations of one family trying to raise a wild colt.
• Seabiscuit—the true story of a Thoroughbred racehorse mistreated as a colt who refused to cooperate with its owners. Through care and understanding by the people involved in its training, Seabiscuit became a champion and a symbol unrelenting determination during the Great Depression and continues to inspire as a motion picture.
Horses are powerful, loving, intelligent animals who serve well the humans who respect them. This has been well documented in horse books throughout the years.
