Where do you usually go when you’re looking for your next holiday destination? Perhaps your local travel agent, or from one of the many websites online, or maybe even your local supermarket?
Hang on, supermarket?
As far-fetched as it may sound, there appears to a growing trend in the numbers of cheap holidays becoming available in supermarkets.
And why not? We can already purchase items such as insurance and mobile phones in the same shopping trip if we wanted to, so the idea of including short haul holidays in with our tins of beans could attract shoppers away from the travel agents.
Indeed, it appears that the majority of such deals are being offered through the so-called ‘cheaper’ supermarkets, with many trialling schemes which offer deals on last minute bargain holidays. Spending habits are changing in response to the credit crunch, with many consumers seeking to reduce their shopping bills in order to save money during a difficult financial climate. And now it seems they could soon be able to save on travel as well as our teabags.
The idea is to offer holiday deals through leaflets, which can be picked up whilst shopping for the weekly supplies. These deals would then be available through either a website or a phone number for a certain period of time before the offers run out. In place of these, new offers would be available in their place; this type of product rotation could allow consumers to have more choice of cheap late deals.
Trial periods are likely to include short-haul breaks – such as ski trips and city breaks – and will offer shoppers the opportunity to grab a great deal on a quality holiday.
By offering everything from short breaks to package holidays at competitive rates, supermarkets are tapping into a market which is very competitive and could allow shoppers the opportunity to both save money and book a holiday should they wish to.
