PowerSellers are not terribly supportive of this program. One PowerSeller noted that this seems to hit a person at his most vulnerable moment. When the negative feedback is fresh, the seller is often so angry that he will agree to pay the $20 fee just out of an emotional reflex. In view of eBay’s new Mutual Feedback Withdrawal program, discussed in detail in Chapter 9, some PowerSellers view this service as obsolete. Some even suggest that keeping this program going is Square Trade’s attempt to capitalize on a seller’s devotion to a spotless feedback rating.
eBay’s ID Verify program proves your identity to your potential customers. For a $5.00 fee, eBay will use your personal information to verify that you can prove you are who you say you are. You submit personal information such as your address, phone number, date of birth, and certain installment and credit accounts with their associated monthly payments. This information is not a credit check, and the credit account information is used only for verification purposes and is never stored permanently on eBay. Only your contact information and date of birth are kept on file. Once you pass the verification process, the fee will be added to your eBay bill, and you will remain ID verified until your name, home address, or telephone number changes. You will then receive an ID Verified icon that will appear in all of your auctions. ID Verify helps you prove yourself to potential customers and helps assure them that you are a valid eBay seller.
Unlike other buyer assurance programs, ID Verify also offers real advantages to the seller. Once you are verified, you are eligible to use the Buy It Now feature on any eBay listing, you are able to bid in an amount above $15,000, and you can sell in eBay’s Mature Audiences category. Currently, ID Verify is only available to residents of the United States and U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam). Keep in mind that once you request ID verification, you will not be able to alter your contact information for 30 days, but with this in mind, the program is definitely worth the small investment it requires. You’ll find the ID Verify program from eBay’s Services menu.
