The Seaquarium in Barcelona is famous among locals and tourists alike and is known as L’Aquarium de Barcelona by the locals. It is considered to be one of the most important leisure and educational resources on the marine environment in Barcelona. The Seaquarium contains about 30 tanks that host more than 11,000 animals of 400 different species.

The biggest attraction for visitors to the Seaquarium in Barcelona is the 80 meter long Oceanarium which contains over six million litres of water. This Seaquarium is the only one of its kind in Europe and is visited by millions of tourists annually. The Barcelona Seaquarium was inaugurated in September 1995 and boasts state of the art technology that is used to produce the various ambient conditions required for the animals here.

The Barcelona Seaquarium is located at the Moll d’Espanya del Port Vell, and opens every day of the year at 9:30 am, and closes at 9 pm during the weekdays; on weekends, the closing time is pushed to 9:30 pm. In June and August however, tourists will find that the Seaquarium is open until 11 pm.

The entry price for adults to the Seaquarium and the Oceanarium is €17. For senior citizens, the price of admission is €14 and for children under 12 and over the age of 4, entry into the Seaquarium is €12. For tourists looking for public transport options to the Seaquarium, there are a number of buses that operate services to the aquarium; the underground also runs an L3 Drassanes and L4 Barceloneta service to the Seaquarium. There is a Blue South Route tourist bus that takes visitors to the Barcelona Seaquarium.

The seaquarium is also situated in a wonderful location, so close to the marina, near to the main beach and at the bottom of Las Ramblas. Las Ramblas is the central point for tourist in the city and is lined with shops, restaurants and a street with many live street performers. The bottom end of Las Ramblas leads out to the front area where the aquarium is located.

The IMAX move threatre is connected to the aquarium and also to a small shopping mall; the IMAX a good venue for seeing 3D and 2D movies. Ten minutes walk takes you to the beach although you need not go so far to find street cafes and restaurants, all of which align the streets directly to the left of the aquarium, looking seawards.
