Barcelona’s metro system is one of the most effective modes of public transport in the region and consists of a chain of electrified railways that work underground. The Metro System also has some trains that run above ground which help transport people to and from the suburbs. The transport infrastructure in Barcelona is highly developed and both regular commuters and tourists often choose to take the metro rather than drive to and around the city.
The metro has been in operation since 1924 and all operations are handled by the Transports Metropolitans De Barcelona. The interiors of the metro rail cars are very comfortable and are decorated in muted colours while the stations are well equipped and modernized.
The lines in Barcelona’s metro system total up to 110 kilometres and serve to connect 150 stations in the city. Barcelona also has plans of extending the metro line even further by adding two more lines; these changes are expected to be completed by the year 2014. The whole metro chain is handled by the Mass Transit Public Transport System of Barcelona.
The metro has different lines that are all colour coded, to make it easy for outsiders to differentiate between the lines. There are 11 lines and they are in the colours red, purple, green, yellow, blue, light green, dark blue, brown and pink. There are various types of ticket packages available for commuters. Line numbers 9 and 10 are still under construction and have not been assigned colours as yet. All the trains, except those that run on lines 6 and 7 have five cars each.
With the majority of the Barcelona system very modern, with most of it developed for the 1992 Olympics, the system has been build with plenty of space and facilities for users. The London Underground in comparison for example, is much older having started in 1883 and with the platforms very narrow and tracks quite deep underground. The Barcelona system is arguably one of the best in the world and perhaps matches the system in South Korea, in terms of effiency, number of trains and station facilities.
Barcelona Metro system is also complimented with an excellent bus service and a plentiful provision of taxi cabs to provide the city as a whole with an excellent all round local transportation system. Getting around the city is certainly fairly easy and one of the great things about this Spanish city.
