It’s a rare feat for a Mumbaikar to wrap up the office by six in the evening on any given day. But, there is an increasing bunch of enthusiasts, who are fast changing their official attire and getting into their dancing shoes to shake a leg. The sophisticated western dance forms are catching up fast in our society, which otherwise prefers the raw dancing styles, usually displayed vigorously in marriages and social festivities. But now, Indians no longer want to throw their limbs in a free-style fashion; instead, they are putting in great efforts to grab the attention in style with sensual Rumba movements or kicking Jive steps. It may sound surprising, but the fascination for western dances has reached to such an extent that even the very Indianized Gujarati and Marwari families are opting for special training session to spice up the marriages with Cha Cha Cha or Waltz. The brides and grooms are learning the steps in advance for the special day, and give their weddings a romantic Ballroom touch.
It’s been a few years since Salsa and other Latin American-European dance styles started whirling in India, and the fever refuses to die down. Rather, the craze has now extended to more complicated and faster dances like Jive, Cha Cha Cha and Samba, which includes naughty and sexy moves. “Earlier Salsa was the most sought after form among Indians, but now other ballroom dances are driving the dance classes in the country,” admits Reesha Dulap, seasoned trainer with the well-known dance academy of Sandeep Soparrkar.
The acceptance of the western dances among all age groups becomes apparent when you find people in their sixties matching their steps with 10-year olds. “One may feel shy initially because of the proximity among the partners, but when you have to concentrate on 2-3 steps in a single beat, there is no time to give a thought about the sex of your partner,” said Deigo, who has successfully participated in various dance competitions with Reesha.
Once the focus is tuned to mutual steps, shyness gives way to sensual movements between the partners. It also helps in building great faith and understanding between the dance partners, without which they can easily fall apart. The inclusion of these dances in various sports events is opening new avenues for the passionate dancers. Many dance competitions are organized all over the world, providing an apt platform and recognition for the swirling talents. The strength, flexibility and concentration required for even a single performance calls for a real sportsman spirit. It is no child’s play to Tango at any professional event.
The training revolves around creating greater flexibility for hip movements and learning to balance the bodies for spinning and rolling together. Styling is another important aspect of job. The movements need to be well complimented by correct gestures and expressions to charm the audiences. And probably it’s the charisma of two figures joining and falling apart in a flash, which drives one to the dance floor.
