Glutamine is only popular with some people, unlike creatine, which is considered a "no brainer" supplement for bodybuilding. While creatine is considered a safe "no brainer," glutamine is only used by some people. Others have stated that its benefits as a supplement for bodybuilding are unclear.

Until very recently, glutamine was considered one of the "must-have" supplements for bodybuilding. However, recent studies have indicated that the benefits of glutamine were vastly overrated. Sixty five percent of the amino acids in your body are made up of glutamine, and it is a non-essential amino acid, which means that the body can make it from other amino acids and molecules in times of deficit. Muscle growth is limited during stress, when amino acids are diminished. So, it makes sense to use glutamine as a supplement for bodybuilding for some people.

There are some who claim that glutamine is necessary to repair damaged muscles and prevent muscle soreness after exercise. Yet, others claim that because it boosts immune function, taking it as a pre-workout supplement helps enhance strength.

However, current research does not show that glutamine is an essential supplement for bodybuilding. Some interesting aspects of the research suggest that while glutamine works under clinical stress testing, it does nothing to enhance a workout; this was with an amount of glutamine that would cost the average bodybuilder up to $1000 per year.

Plus, the types of "stress" they were referring to included severe burns, AIDS, and extensive surgery. The tests also showed that using a glutamine supplement during weight training had no effect on muscle performance, body composition, or muscle breakdown in healthy adults.

Some people believed that glutamine improved cell volume, but this was disproven during a research study.

The question of whether or not glutamine improves glycogen stores after exercise was not directly answered; however, some bodybuilders say it isn't necessary to know because you will be drinking a high carbohydrate shake after your workout anyway.

A final study showed that your body creates up to 48 percent more protein when an amino acid drink is consumed after a workout. Unfortunately, there was no change in protein synthesis when glutamine was added to the mix. So is glutamine a good supplement for bodybuilding? What do you believe now?

As with most things, the truth is somewhere in between. While glutamine may not be all that it was hyped up to be in the past, it does provide some benefits. Glutamine apparently can be a good supplement for bodybuilding to restore testosterone levels after exercise.

It is also a good supplement for bodybuilding when used in conjunction with a fat loss program to get that hard, ripped look. This means that those who are attempting to get extremely lean should benefit from glutamine use as a means of preserving muscle.
