Dowry originally served the purpose of helping the husband to feed and protect his family, and to give the wife and children some support if he were to die. However, according to several scholars, dowry has evolved to serve as a form of protection for the wife against the possibility of ill treatment by her husband and his family. In other words, the dowry provides an incentive to the husband not to harm his wife.
Although dowry were widely practiced in Europe, the tradition were mostly practiced in Asian countries. Dowry is a common practice in many Asian countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In India, there was also a practice which was widely removed in their practice of marriage. This was the bride burning and dowry death. Today, the payment of a dowry has been prohibited under in 1961 Dowry Prohibition Act in Indian civil law and subsequently by Sections 304B and 498a of the Indian Penal Code.
Bride Price
In other cultures, the groom or his family were expected to pay a bride price to the bride's family for the right to marry the daughter, or dower, which was payable to the bride. This required the groom to work for the bride's family for a set period of time. Also known as bride wealth, this is an amount of money or property or wealth paid by the groom or his family to the parents of a woman upon the marriage of their daughter to the groom.
