Football boots date in to the time of King Henry VIII. His majesty requested quite a few pairs in 1526…45 velvet pairs and 1 leather pair for soccer. Since then soccer shoes have progressed to become a major part of the sport and nowadays they are made using materials like carbon fiber and synthetic leather.
Like football itself football boots have gone through a lot of improvements over time. Just before 1891 studs…blades or any form of sole weren't allowed. Following 1891 changes…studs and blades became legitimate providing they were made from leather and not as big as half an inch. These types of studs and blades were initially hammered into the shoes and professional players of the time had several pairs with numerous stud lengths which is probably the first time football shoes have evolved.
The next evolution begun in the mid-1950s and it is one of the most dubious. Soccer heritage mentioned that throughout the 1950’s in Switzerland…Adidas who was Germany's boot supplier kitted the German team with the first ever screw-in-studs football shoes. However…Puma have counter believed that they have been supplying screw-in-studs around 1952. Nonetheless whoever created screw-in-studs the 2nd advancement has been the creation of the screw-in-studs boots.
However…between 1950 and 1960 football shoe design took a huge step forward and boots actually begun to make a difference on the game. In Northern Europe football shoes still had the ankle protection…and the actual reason they were referred to as boots. However…in South America the boots were much more flexible and lighter weight without the need of ankle protection. It was a boot made to raise ball control… increase kicking power and help to make players move quicker and switch direction faster.
The company Adidas then produced the latest kind of soccer boot which had much more traction between the ball and boot and along with larger contact areas…and a series of power and swerve zones…it permitted players to generate better swerves and more powerful strikes of the ball.
This kind of technology had been just the beginning of what was to come. Polymer extrusion engineering and other materials permitted the creation of a more flexible sole…and studs had been substituted by blades which offered players more stability. Today there are football boots that weigh only 200g and with each passing football season…the football boots are getting more and more advanced…and now there are carbon sole plates adaptive studs that will extend and retract by up to 3mm.
Looking to the long run there is likely to be more advances to soccer boot technology which will make the players perform better still and possibly boots that may react to certain pitch conditions…whether that be rain during the game or the pitch getting drier…the boots will adjust accordingly.
Shoe engineering has come such a long way since King Henry VIII and exactly who knows the other aspects of soccer will change just like soccer boots.
