Losing weight, losing stomach fat and losing love handles shouldn't be rocket science! But why then are there always new diet fads and new exercises in life style magazines?
I mean, if something works then there's no need for a new plan, is there?
Read on to discover two crucial flaws in the theory of fat loss - the low-calorie diet.

It does seem logical that if you eat less and exercise more, your body will burn the excess fat and then you'll be slimmer .... surely it will work??

Well, yes, sort of ... but, there are some extra considerations that complicate things just a wee bit though ... You'll find you'll become skinny and unhealthy if you just try to eat less without thinking through all aspects!

Here are two basic reasons why low calorie diets don't work:

The first reason is that all calories are not created equal. Processed food, with additives and treatments to make it last longer simply does not have the "good" calories found in - for example - apples and vegetables. What you have to watch is food with "bad" calories. Calories that are in natural, unprocessed food are much better for you than calories in "junk food" and processed foodstuff.

You want to get slimmer and healthier, lose stomach fat, get rid of love handles - everything. It wouldn't work even if you starved yourself.

A dramatic example would be to ONLY drink "Zero Coke" - there's absolutely no calories in that drink. Would you lose weight? Certainly. Will you be healthy? Absolutely not! Very soon you'll be badly malnourished .....

Your body NEEDS calories to survive. Some foods require more energy to metabolize than what they provide.

A large apple contains about 100 calories and so do three strips of bacon. Think of the difference for your body eating an apple or eating bacon ... will you get fat from the apples or from the bacon?

Scondly, muscle is more efficient at using up calories than fat is. In fact, fat is sort of "dead tissue", that is, it doesn't do anything for your metabolism while muscle tissue actually consumes energy just to maintain itself. That is the reason why people with a high ratio of lean muscle to fat can eat more, and still stay slim - and people who are overweight watch what they eat.

Now there are obviously other things to consider when you want to lose love handles and stomach fat, or simply lose weight. Union rules apply to fat as well - last in first out. What that means is that the fat you put on first - most often found on your thighs and around your midriff - is the last to disappear!

Patience is needed if you truly want to lose love handles, and some muscle building as well. Your extra fat did not appear overnight, you most probably put it on over several years. The good news it will melt away far quicker than you put it on, but it will still take time.

If you go on a low calorie diet you will not build muscle, instead your body loses muscle. You need a well functioning metabolism - provided by muscles - and if you don't have that your body will not be able to use up your excess fat.

You will se some "results" from most low calorie diets - you lose muscle tissue and you lose water, so you appear to slim down. But long term they don't work!
