The Quran states the facts relating to shab-e-mairaj and the events that conspired at that night. All Muslims believe in the night and the teachings of Quran regarding that night.
According to the Quran, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaihi Wassallam) was moved from Masjid-al-Haram to Masjid-al-Aqsa. Later on the same night, he was also transported to the Heavens where Allah spoke to him and bestowed the five essential prayers of a day on him and his people.
However, people usually wonder about things such as what did the Prophet do on the same day the coming year or the year after? Did he celebrate the night or fast the very next day? Did he ask his people to worship Allah more during that night as it was a special night? The answer to all these questions is no. These practices did not occur as this was not the practice of the Prophet or his Sahaabah.
Facts about Shab-e-Mairaj
One should believe that none of the above-mentioned practices are true because if they were, the Prophet would have practiced them. Moreover, there is no evidence for the existence of such practices and if it were the case, his companions would have made sure to deliver the information to his people.
Therefore, if celebrating Shab-e-Mairaj was an essential practice, the Sahaabah or also known as his companions, would have narrated the event and made sure that the people knew about it. His companions did not miss a thing about the religion and they were usually the first ones to practice something if the Prophet asked them to.
However, for long, Muslims have seen their ancestors celebrating the night and have not once questioned the concept behind the celebration. For all these Muslims, it is important to understand that it is not the ancestors that we are obliged to follow, but the Prophet and the teachings of the Quran. According to a Quranic verse,
“In the Messenger of Allah you have a fine example for he who hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah abundantly.” (Surah al-Ahzaab: 21).
Concerns of the People
People still ask various questions regarding the night. They may ask what is wrong about celebrating the night if your intentions are good and if you plan to worship Allah during the particular day.
However, according to Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, “Fasting on the twenty-seventh of Rajab and spending that night in prayer is a bid’ah (innovation), and every bid’ah is a going astray.” (Majmoo’ Fataawa , 20/440).
Based on this, one can easily say that no matter what the intentions, if it is not done by the Prophet, it is not allowed in Islam. Therefore, one should abstain from worshipping more than usual during that night based on a belief that has no Islamic standing at all.
However, if you have a habit to worship more during the month of Rajab, or if you have the habit of fasting during the month, it is not wrong to fast on that particular day as well. However, worshipping and fasting particularly for Shab-e-Mairaj is not allowed.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is best to not follow the beliefs that your ancestors have been following. Question their beliefs, look for solutions in the life of the Prophet and follow the Quran teaching related to a specific topic.
