A lot of the time we will purchase goods expecting them to be working properly and for them to have spent many hours tested in a laboratory somewhere to ensure that we don’t get electric shocks or cuts when using the appliance throughout its lifetime. Unfortunately there are a worryingly large number of injuries (100,000) and deaths (50) in UK homes every year that are caused by faulty electrical goods or defective products.
The problem is widespread enough for there to be a governmental department that investigates such occurrences called the Electrical Safety Council. The ESC investigates all manner of electrical injuries and faults from toasters that give you more than a wake up in the morning with electric shocks to kettles that fail to shut off when they get too hot. These are just two instances which have been reported and many others can be fatal.
How do we make sure we don’t buy a dodgy or faulty appliance? There are actually a number of ways we can do our best to avoid the faulty products when we choose a new or replacement model:
Buy familiar brands
Buying a brand name you have heard of or better yet are known as good performers in that particular product category is the best bet. Bigger brands will have more to lose with faulty goods so they have extensive safety testing and are much more likely to have strong customer guarantees should the product fail.
Check for guarantees
Guarantees and manufacturer warranties are important to look out for; some retailers will offer extended warranties for a small price to cover your appliance for longer. This is good for those who think that their products always seem to fail as soon as they are out of warranty.
Check product reviews
The internet has made it much easier to get information on almost any subject and one particular piece of information is the consumer’s number one tool, product reviews. These are often on retailer’s websites or independent consumer sites and provide the thoughts and opinions of people who bought the product and want to let people know how it performed. You can often identify common faults with some models and know which ones to avoid or go with because they get consistently high reviews.
