Exercise: The need to do some form of exercise every day. It promotes circulation and benefits the heart, lungs, musculoskeletal, and the nervous system. Choose an activity you enjoy and are able to perform without any major limitations. Examples: walking, biking, weight training, Yoga, Tai chi, swimming, hiking, et cetera.
Proper diet: “You are what you eat”. A proper diet is essential for a healthy mind and body. It is important to follow a sound nutrition program for ideal body weight and to maintain physical and mental well-being. Don’t get caught up in new fads and diets. Eat a well-balanced meal.
Mind/Body awareness: It is very important to be aware of yourself and your surroundings for injury prevention and healthy living.
Avoiding hazardous activities/habits: Avoid smoking (increased risk of spinal disc problems amongst other things), alcohol, drugs, et cetera. The importance of avoiding these dangerous activities cannot be overly emphasized. Sooner or later, your poor habits will catch up on you.
Sleep: “Sleep is the mother of healing.” It is important to get adequate and proper sleep. Going to bed early and rising early will keep you in sync with the rhythms of nature. If you go against nature, you will lose.
Appropriate rest: It is essential to take time out to rest and decompress. Take time out to relax and do the things you enjoy. It allows you to recharge mentally and physically.
Meditation/Stress Management: In this hyperactive, over-stimulated world of ours, meditation is essential for everyone. Not necessarily for spiritual reasons, but to give us time to digest our thoughts, emotions, and feelings. For mental, emotional and psychological well-being, it is important to meditate daily.
Proper relationships: Today’s fast moving world is filled with separations and the lack of strong support networks. It is essential for all of us to foster and work towards building strong support networks comprised of family and friends. It gives us the backbone to accomplish our life’s purpose.
