What are some ways to ease the itching and discomfort of children with eczema skin problems and help them to cope.
When you see eczema spots and patches on a young child, you really feel for them. You know how itchy they feel and that their irritability is due to this awful discomfort. They may also be crying more, having sleep disruptions and generally in snappy moods. If you are their parent you wish more than anything to help them.
First of all, reassure your kids that they can still play with other children and that they aren't contagious. This can be a big comfort to them as they may associate their rash with chicken pox and be afraid that they are contagious. Of course,
tell them to try and not rub their skin or expose it to dirt as you don't want them to get an infection or to irritate it
by friction.
Children under five often have the dermatitis manifested on the facial areas such as the forehead and cheeks and around the body in various areas, especially where there are creases. Some will get blisters filled with fluid. Remember that it's good to keep out of the sun so you don't have them get a sunburn on top of the eczema. Kids that are a bit older will also have it around their inner elbow, on their legs and wrists, on the top part of the knees as well as on the body's trunk.
If your child has an allergy to peanuts, a history of asthma or seasonal allergies to pollen, then they may be prone to
eczema and to try to find the contributing causes would be an important tool to stop the outbreaks. This means to keep track of various foods that cause your children to get red patches and to also see if pets in the home or other factors such as dust mites or chemicals in the home or garage.
One thing important is to psychologically help your children see things with perspective or humor. Remind them that this is frustrating but not a tragedy such as those suffering from an earthquake or hurricane. You can also make fun baths for them
with oatmeal, but don't add in fragranced or perfumed bubble bath items as those ingredients may result in skin allergies and further eczema outbreaks.
