They are so comfortable. Who wants to wear a stiff shirt with a collar or a tie when you can throw on a comfortable t-shirt? There really is no other piece of clothing that compares to the way a t-shirt feels like when you are wearing one. They are so comfortable that many people wear a t-shirt to sleep in because even pajamas aren't as comfortable as a t-shirt.
