When surveillance cameras were introduced, a large percent of the population believed that it will help deter crime and enhance public safety; while a number of people had raised their brows on the tool’s effectiveness in combating crime.
While many countries purchase CCTV systems, suspicion on a security camera’s effectiveness has sparked debates. One clear example is London where security cameras have become increasingly prevalent. There are 10,000 units of micro security camera installed in London establishments and public premises but security officials cannot catch law breakers in the area. In a World Conference, opponents of CCTV stated that only three percent of crime was solved by CCTV thus indicating security cameras cannot solve heinous crimes. Also, a recent study published by the New York University instigated that CCTV cameras do not completely deter crimes.
The public’s misconception that CCTV systems are deployed to reduce crime rather than eradicate it has created huge problems. Jigisha Ghosh Murder Case
The murder of IT executive Jigisha Ghosh was the center of Indian newspaper and television reports. Ghosh’s body was found lying on the roadside near Surajkund, Faridabad and all her belongings were found missing. The victim was said to be carrying a large amount of money, mobile phones and pieces of jewelry that might’ve provoked the suspects to robbing her. The police conducted investigations and later found out the store where Ghosh was last seen. The Reebok Showroom, where the victim purchased some clothes, had CCTV recordings that helped end the investigation. In the recording, the images of three young boys purchasing a watch were found and were verified as Ghosh’s perpetrators.
Richard Whelan Case
Twenty eight-year-old Richard Whelan was stabbed to death in a London bus after his attempts to defend his girlfriend. The CCTV recording showed the suspect, Anthony Joseph, throwing chips at his Whelan’s girlfriend and grinning at the camera as he left the bus.
Jamie Bulger Murder Case
The CCTV recording at the New Strand Shopping Centre contributed to the arrest of the killers of three-year-old Jamie Bulger in 1993. This proves that surveillance cameras play an essential role in solving crimes. The recording showed the toddler being abducted by Robert Thomson and Jon Venables both 10 years old at the time.
