By the time you read this article, we will be well into the process of change when it comes to Medicare. You’ve likely heard a lot of things, read many different points of view about the changes, and perhaps have even taken some time to call around to health insurance brokers and ask questions. If you have done that, you are likely more informed than those who are just new to Medicare this year. There are a whole lot of changes to contend with and trying to figure them all out is fairly overwhelming, to say the least.

Something to know right off the bat is that Medicare supplement insurance (Medigap) is specifically designed to work in lockstep with the original Medicare to help you offset the high costs of co-pays and deductibles. You also need to know that Medicare supplement insurance is all the same – period.

It doesn’t matter who you get it from or where you go to get it, it’s all the same insurance policy, meaning it’s standardized. The only thing that may be different is what each health insurance company charges you. If you need to watch your health care dollars, then buyer beware of the price variations and shop smart.

Since most insurance companies are in business to be – well, in business – they will charge a premium that may be higher than you can afford. This doesn’t mean you have to accept what they charge. It just means you need to shop around to find an insurance company whose pricing structure suits your budget. And yes, it “is” possible to find a company like that.

So what’s different now when it comes to Medicare? First, Medicare Plans E, H, I and J are not available any longer. You will now find that there are two new plans, Medigap Plan M and plan N. Just so you don’t get confused, Part M will be much like Plan D. It won’t cover Part B deductibles and only covers half of Part A and there are no co-payments. Plan N is also similar to Part D in that it is designed to lower policy premiums by making use of co-pays.

The bottom line here is that you will have “choices” and having choices is always a good thing when it comes to choosing a health care policy that works for you. When in doubt, call a licensed health insurance broker and ask questions. You’ll be glad you did.
