Believe it or not, grunge music had been available long before the end of the twentieth century. Flannel has not always been the attire of grunge, but the fight against the government has been. It appears that the prior generation, who was all about greed and hairspray, ran out of steam when grunge hit the scene.
However, the true “Godfather of Grunge” was the one and only Mr. Neil Young. Yes, Neil Young from the flower times. Yup, the same man who founded Buffalo Springfield and started Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Neil Young was arguing against corporate mongers before Kurt Cobain was a sparkle in his mother’s heart.
From the start, Neil Young seemed to have nothing but disdain for musicians who made a spectacle of themselves with fancy clothes or showy gigs. He was the epitome of a cool sixties hippie. In addition to being the hippies’ Eddie Vedder, he always changed his band or sound as soon as he started to become mainstream.
It now seems incorrect that Rolling Stone Magazine listed a Nirvana vinyl album before a Neil Young vinyl album in their greatest 100 albums of all time. It does appear, by this disclosure, that Young must not be as good as his followers. No matter what Rolling Stone Magazine says, a Neil Young vinyl record will always be chosen by proper music fans, even before the classic Nirvana album, Nevermind.
Neil Young never loved the sound of CD’s and instead favored the allure of vinyl albums. Records seemed to build a relationship between the musician and fan that CD’s never had. You can detect this in any Neil Young vinyl record ever recorded. It is beneficial to remind yourself that Neil Young has never been on a break and has a new LP every few years. You can always be sure to find his new music in many styles, including that of vinyl.
There are many reasons to praise Mr. Young, but one is that he is in a select group that has been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame two times. In 1995, he was inducted as a solo performer, and then in 1997, he was inducted with Buffalo Springfield.
There will never be another grunge god in the history of rock-n-roll like Neil Young. You would be hard pressed to find any other artist like Mr. Young anytime soon.
So, be sure the next jerk who goes on about grunge in the nineties hears a good lesson about the true founder of grunge. Remember, there might not have ever been a Nirvana if there hadn’t originally been a Neil Young.
